In July, a Saturday night in Nevis could have meant any of a dozen places. In late October, most of the plans that need a date on the calendar run through one address on Main Street, and the City of Nevis owns it.
The Nevis Municipal Liquor Store sits at 100 Main Street West. Its on-sale hours run Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 a.m., and Sunday from noon to 8 p.m. Those late hours are the first clue. With the summer shops closed and most of the lake traffic gone, the Muni is where the scheduled events moved. Its fall lineup includes a Halloween Pub Crawl and a comedy series. The next comedy show falls on the same Saturday as the firearms deer opener.
The Summer Places Have Already Gone Dark
Start with what's closed, because the list explains everything after it.
Several storefronts along Bunyan Trails and Main Street run on a summer schedule and post it plainly:
- Muskie Waters coffee shop, 118 Bunyan Trails Road, posts summer hours of 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, followed by "Closed until APRIL."
- Sunshine & Willow, 111 Bunyan Trails Road, is listed as closed after Labor Day.
- Two Loon Candy, 109 Main Street West, is listed as closed for the season after Labor Day.
That's a coffee stop, a shop and a candy counter, all within a short walk of the Tiger Muskie, all done until spring. Anyone who spent the summer getting a morning coffee on Bunyan Trails will need a different routine until April.
The Muni Took Over the Calendar
The Muni had a busy summer, and the City of Nevis fourth-quarter newsletter gives the rundown. In the Muni's column, the newsletter lists a June summer bash with musicians Taylor Schroeder and Matt Graunke. Next came Bands & BBQ in July, with 19 cooking teams, which raised more than $3,500 for the local Fire Relief Association. Muskie Days brought music to the Muni stage, and the Marine Corps League held a cook-off in August.
The important part is what came after. In September, the City of Nevis newsletter reports, the Muni held "our first of four comedy shows." A four-show series starting just as the summer crowd leaves is a series aimed at the people who stay. The newsletter's own invitation is to "follow us on Facebook or stop in for a beverage!"
The two dates that matter most over the next few weeks both fall on Saturdays.
Saturday, October 31: Halloween Pub Crawl
The newsletter lists the Halloween Pub Crawl for October 31. Matt Graunke & the Crow River Rebellion, who also played the Muni's June bash, list a 5 p.m. show at the Nevis Muni that night for the crawl on the band's events page. The route, the stops and any costume contest hadn't been posted when this went up. The Muni's Facebook page is the place to look for them.
Halloween falling on a Saturday this year helps. Families can take in the Park Rapids Downtown Trick or Treat the afternoon before, Friday, October 30. It's free, with Heritage Living Center handing out treats from 3 to 5 p.m. and participating downtown businesses from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Saturday evening is then free for the crawl in Nevis.
Saturday, November 7: Comedy Night on Opening Day
The newsletter puts the next comedy show on November 7. That's also opening day of the Minnesota firearms deer season. The Minnesota DNR lists the 2026 season as November 7 to 22 in the 100-series areas and DPAs 604, 679 and 684, and November 7 to 15 in the 200-series areas and the other listed DPAs. The DNR's deer hunting page lists which area falls where.
Booking a comedy show for opening night gives everyone a place to be after dark. Hunters come in from the stand, and for everyone else the weekend goes quiet. The performer, start time and ticket price for November 7 hadn't been announced yet, so check the Muni's page as the date gets closer.
Who Else Is Serving Dinner
The Muni has the events, but it isn't the only kitchen in town. Here's where things stand in late October:
- Tavern 203, 203 Bunyan Trails Drive, posts hours on its Toast ordering page of Sunday 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday through Thursday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. With weekend hours starting at 10 a.m., it's the obvious brunch option now that the coffee shop is closed.
- Iron Horse Bar & Grill, 120 Bunyan Trails Road, is in the Nevis Civic & Commerce dining directory. Fall hours weren't posted, so call before you go.
- Flour Chicks Bakery, 206 Bunyan Trail Drive, is in the same directory, also with no seasonal hours listed.
Put the closed list next to this one and the street changes character. In summer, the stretch near the Tiger Muskie has coffee, candy and shopping. In November, Bunyan Trails is mostly a dinner street, and the night out moves a block over to the Muni.
A Few Doors Still Open Daytime
Some daytime spots are holding steady. The Tippy Canoe, the novelty shop across from the Tiger Muskie statue, added two rooms in 2025 and nearly doubled its space, one room for art and one for merchandise, according to the Park Rapids Enterprise. Fall hours weren't posted, so it's worth a call before a gift run.
For time outdoors, the Heartland State Trail doesn't follow anyone's business hours. The DNR describes it as a 49-mile paved trail between Park Rapids and Cass Lake. Its Nevis access is at County Road 18 and Village Road. Before November 7, a late-October walk or ride on pavement is an easy way to spend an afternoon. After the opener, blaze orange makes sense on any outing near the woods.
Out on Sixth Crow Wing, the off-season is getting fresh attention too. The Park Rapids Enterprise reported that Angela and Casey Hulett bought the 81-year-old Royal Starr Resort, 13 cabins on 43 acres, in November 2025 and moved to Nevis. The same story says they're courting winter and shoulder-season visitors, snowmobilers included, and have winterized two cabins for year-round use. When out-of-town family wants to visit for the holidays, that's a nearby place to put them up.
The Rest of the Calendar, Week by Week
The Muni holds the anchor dates. A handful of other events across the area fill in the weeks between:
- Monday, November 2: Menahga Civic & Commerce's 55th Birthday Bash, 5:30 p.m., Menahga Senior & Community Center, 12 Cedar Ave. SE. The listing says it's open to everyone, with no membership required.
- Thursday, November 5: Trivia at Two Inlets Country Store, 55735 County Highway 44, 7:30 p.m., with pizza, teams of up to six and a $50 prize for the winning team. It's a good warm-up two nights before the comedy show.
- Monday, November 9: Nevis City Council meeting at 6 p.m.
- Wednesday, November 11: Nevis city hall closed for Veterans Day.
- Monday, November 16: Nevis Civic & Commerce meeting, 6 to 7 p.m., at the City of Nevis, 104 Main St.
- Thursday and Friday, November 26 and 27: City hall closed for Thanksgiving and the day after.
City hall at 104 Main Street West keeps posted office hours of 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, and 7:30 a.m. to noon Friday, closed for lunch from noon to 1 p.m. The office phone is 218-652-3866. City hall and the Muni are just a few doors apart on Main Street. The newsletter lists two more comedy shows after November 7 to finish the four-show series, with dates still to come.
If the Muni's calendar has you thinking about a year-round place within walking distance of Main Street, or a cabin you could keep open past Labor Day, I'd love to talk it through with you. Reach out to Kristine Walsh whenever you're ready. Let's Connect.
